Before and After

During a lovely date night, one in which Cal and I ate food that did not end up in our hair and we actually got to speak to each other, one theme became abundantly clear.  Our life will be eternally divided into two periods; pre-kids and post-kids.  Our entire conversation revolved around how our life has evolved since becoming a family of 5.  Almost every topic started with the words "Before the kids...." or "Since the kids..."  And it's not just ways our lifestyle has changed that we use those words to define time.  It also applies to current events, i.e., "Did that happen before the kids were here or after?" or  "Did we see that movie before the kids or after?"
When we went from a party of 2 to a party of 5, obviously everything shifted and even the tiniest aspects of our lives have changed.  For example, these days:

A big date night out ended at 10pm with a 6 pack of beer and a bag of potato chips.  And it was delightful.
Fun times in parenthood.

A dentist appointment is vacation.

Yoga pants, once used to do yoga, are now my office attire.

The standard to which I once held my appearance when out in public, is shamefully low.

My hair hasn't been out of a ponytail in 10 months.
*Seriously- if you come to our house and I'm wearing pants with buttons, make-up and/or have                obviously brushed my hair, pat yourself on the back because you are considered "Fancy Company".

When drinking a cup of coffee it was implied that said coffee is hot and poured within the last 10 minutes.  These days I find myself at noon microwaving the same cup of coffee I poured at 7am.  And it's delicious.

I used to read the newspaper.  Now I read "Brown Bear, Brown Bear"(27 times).

What has changed the most is that we now put three little human's needs in front of our own.  We make sacrifices daily and in return we feel more love and purpose than we could ever have experienced before they arrived.
